Made for TV movies are quite common, often released straight to network television, debuting on the channels that are most relevant to the topic of the movie or have already shown the television show it was adapted from if that is the case. The first were seen during the early 1970’s and showed the television audience that there was more than television shows on the tube to enjoy and you could actually watch a great flick for free! Well, today, these made for television movies are often the ‘B’ list movies that are relevant to already released mini-series or are relevant to the times or network and are released for that network’s audience. These movies can follow every genre and are often some of the greats that we enjoy more so than others. “Category 7”. When it comes to the end of the world, what better way to go than with an extremely huge storm that wipes out everything in its path? This was an edge-of-your-seat thriller that keeps you wondering whether the next pound of thunder is going to take you out of your seat literally.
“Sabrina the Teenage Witch”. The comic started on Archie, led to a cartoon, then a great made for TV movie that had some great not-so-known teen actors of the time and a great plot that followed the original story line extremely closely, perhaps landing its spot in this list. The movie spawned a modern television mini-series that still airs today.
“Buffy the Vampire Slayer”. This was a great movie that spawned the more popular television series starring Sarah Michelle Gellar and pretty much giving her the career she now has. The movie consists of Buffy who learns while she is in High School that she is really a vampire slayer that needs to protect her home town from evil. Scary.
“Brian’s Song”. This was a made for TV movie that was released in 1971 and follows a tear jerking story of two ball players that learn about friendship and loss along the path of their lives. While one is in optimal health, he must help his pal recover, only to switch roles in the end.
“The Holocaust”. Of course, historical relevance is the case here, as this is a tear jerking story no matter which way it is told. The deaths of so many innocent people that were only guilty of their beliefs and just being born who they were, with a tyrannical leader that was more than a bastard, this is a movie that is often plaid to teach history to those who are interested.
“Duel”. This was an early release of Spielberg, released in the early 70’s and raising hairs on the backs of the television audience. Yes, even Spielberg has released some classic made for TV movies, with this one being a great thriller to add to the list.
“Sybil”. If you know who Sally Field is, you most likely know about the movie “Sybil”, which features a woman that is suffering from a disorder that affects her personality. This was a movie that brought Sally Field to the status she is in today, and has likely been seen by most cable viewers.
“A Girl Like Me: The Gwen Aroujo Story”. This is a more modern film that features a boy that grows up to be a transsexual and is murdered for being the way he is. The story follows the court’s story as the trial proceeds and follows the mother’s struggle to seek justice for her child.
“Odd Girl Out”. This is a teen lesson movie that was released to LMN and Lifetime on cable television about a young girl in high school that learns what happens when the gossip comes the other way. Once part of the cool crowd, she becomes pushed away from the group and finds herself unsure of who to trust as her childhood best friend isn’t even there for her, and all over a boy.
“Gracie’s Choice”. This is a great made for TV movie about a girl, Gracie, whose mother is less than reliable and eventually leaves the children with their grandmother. When the grandmother can’t care for the children anymore, Gracie has to make a choice whether to assume guardianship or pursue the life of a teen.

These made for TV movies are remembered for their originality, good stories, and awesome quality for the cable movie world. Often, the made for TV movies can be so lame, they aren’t even worth watching, but these have definitely earned the right to grace anyone’s television screen.
