10 Ways to a Better Morning Commute

So it’s Monday and I am off to work after a busy weekend of doing well… not much.  It’s back to rush hour traffic, honking, and general rudeness.  Yep, what a great way to start the week, NOT!  I began thinking about different ideas for making the morning commute better through the use of satellite technologies (of course).  Several of these apply to situations where you carpool, but some work just as well for that solo driver as they do their lonely cruise every day.  Actually these all are for any driving situation I was just thinking about them this morning on my commute (sorry about that title.. it’s a Monday after all).

  1. In-Car Satellite TV service.  Okay, this is one for the carpool fans out there who can enjoy some TV on the way to work from the back seat.  AT&T tried to fire up a satellite TV service but it failed (CruiseCast).  Fortunately we have other options like the TracVision A7: http://www.kvh.com/Leisure/Auto-Systems/Television/All-Television-Systems/TracVision-A7.aspx.  This allows you to get up to 185 channels of DIRECTV service for your car. BTW, this is AWESOME for road trips with the family!

  2. Satellite Radio – If you are a fan of my blog you know how I feel about my XM satellite radio.  I simply love it because I can always find something worth listening to.  It really helps me kill some time.

  3. GPS – Find some stops along the way to make your morning commute more tolerable.  Where’s the closest Starbucks?  Thanks to your mobile GPS you will never be without a skinny fat-free vanilla latte (Venti of course).

  4. Satellite Weather – You need to be able to see what is going on with the weather right?  Especially if you live in a coastal area or like to chase storms on your way to work in the morning. This is obviously nice to have all the time, especially on long road trips but you never know when you might need to know the whether for your commute as well.

  5. Satellite Traffic – Avoid bad traffic with a traffic feed to your GPS system.  This turns your GPS into one of the most valuable tools you could own at least for avoiding those massive traffic jams.

  6. Satellite Phone – Okay we are stretching a little here to get some satellite ideas down because there is no particular reason why you would use a satellite phone over a cell phone unless you are going to be in remote areas where there are no cell towers and commuting to work.  Hmmm.  Okay, that takes care of one or two people maybe.  So this is basically so you have a service always on in your vehicle that you can rely on to work just about anywhere, can you hear me now?

  7. Satellite Internet – Why struggle with just being able to use the Internet capabilities of your phone when you are in your vehicle when you can have a mobile broadband connection via satellite internet.  Here is just one example solution: http://www.groundcontrol.com/bgan-in-motion-chooser.htm.

  8. Broadcast an Internet show using your mobile broadband connection right from your car as you are stuck in traffic (a true live report).  There are times when I would DEFINITELY watch this so get your Satellite Internet feed ready to go, a camera, a computer and you are ready to stream.

  9. Install voice recognition software so you can speak emails and listen to them being read to you while you drive.  Okay you can already do this if you plug your cell phone in right?  I’m talking about using your car’s satellite Internet connection of course!

  10. GPS Tracking systems are also nice so others can actually track YOUR progress say in the event that you get brave and get off the main roads and get lost.  I would have no idea what that might be like (so… I have used this service once or twice).  For the record, my “shortcuts” almost NEVER work!
